The Bjerknes Center offers annually two different course formats for training in idea development and proposal writing. Common for both formats are that skills and competences are trained using the candidates’ own research ideas. The outcomes for the participants are, in addition to acquired proposal writing skills, a project concept (Bjerknes proposal writing training 1), or a complete proposal ready for submission (Bjerknes proposal writing training 2)
Bjerknes proposal writing training 1
Workshop: Learn how to develop successful project proposals using own research ideas
On-site workshop two full days, April or May, max. 15 participants
Outcomes:
- Co-developed project concepts based on the ideas of 3 participants.
- Participants gain skills to present a project idea shortly and concisely (pitching), to develop a project plan, to prepare and structure a project description, and to draft a project budget.
- Participants gain knowledge about different components of a research proposal targeting different funding sources, and how calls for proposals are planned.
- Participants gain competence to plan, write and submit a successful project proposal
Participants:
Target group are early career scientists (PhD, Post Doc, Researcher) who have concrete plans to develop a project proposal but have little or no experience yet in proposal writing. Participants with own project ideas and a plan to submit a proposal within the coming year will be prioritized.
Teachers:
The research advisers of the Bjerknes member institutes UiB-GFI, NORCE Climate, UiB-GEO, and NERSC
Course content:
The workshop includes lectures, group work and plenary discussion. At the beginning of the workshop, participants present their project ideas in the form of a short pitch. All participants then select only three of these ideas to be developed step by step in group work during the workshop. Results from each group work are presented and discussed in plenary, and each of the three groups get feedback from the teachers and the other groups. Background knowledge about the respective proposal sections and instructions to develop them during group work are given by the teachers in plenary lectures.
Targeted funding schemes:
The class has a special focus on funding schemes targeting early career scientists (more info here). Information about suitable schemes offered by Research Council of Norway and the European Commission will be given. Participants who target other funding schemes are welcome to join as well. Some information on evaluation criteria and proposal templates of these funding schemes will be shown, but for more details we recommend joining the Bjerknes proposal writing training 2.

Bjerknes proposal writing training 2
Class: Develop your own research idea into a project proposal through dedicated coaching and training sessions
Weekly alternating online lectures and on-site writing seminars, October – February, Tuesdays 10:30 – 12:00, unlimited number of participants
Outcomes:
- A competitive proposal developed individually by each participant to be submitted for funding after completion of the class.
- Participants gain skills to pitch a project idea, to develop a research proposal, to write a scientific CV and to draft a project budget.
- Participants gain knowledge about call requirements and evaluation processes.
- Participants gain/consolidate competence to plan, write and submit a successful project proposal.
Format and timing:
Offered annually over a period of 5 months, October - February. Weekly alternating online lectures and on-site writing seminars of 1.5 hours each Tuesdays 10:30 – 12:00. Individual remote work on the proposal writing in between the classes. Regular individual feedback from research advisers and scientific mentors.

Target group is early career scientists (PhD, Post Doc, Researcher) who have concrete plans to submit a project proposal within the coming year but have little or no experience yet in proposal writing.
The focus of this class is on an assisted full proposal development towards a concrete call for proposals. Early career scientists who are interested in general proposal writing training but are not yet ready to develop a full proposal may join the Bjerknes proposal writing training 1 - Workshop: Learn how to develop successful project proposals using own research ideas instead.

Course content:
Through dedicated training and coaching sessions, participants consecutively develop their scientific idea into a complete proposal ready to be submitted for funding. Specific aspects of project proposals – such as objectives, impact, CV, and work plan – are explained during the online lectures. Participants get tools, concrete instructions, and examples to perform remote work tasks on these aspects. These work tasks can be performed in the on-site writing seminars which are arranged in the weeks in-between the bi-weekly lectures. Participants get feedback on their completed tasks by their research adviser, and can get peer feedback during the writing seminars. Participants also interact with a scientific mentor for scientific feedback.

The class has a special focus on funding schemes targeting early career scientists (more info here) . In-depth information on evaluation criteria, proposal templates, and CV templates of these funding schemes will be central. Participants who target other funding schemes are welcome to join as well. Lectures and/or individual coaching will be adapted to the participants’ needs.
