Short biography:
Peter Haugan is professor of oceanography at the Geophysical Institute since 1999 and also affiliated with the Institute of Marine Research. He is presently the elected chair of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC of UNESCO) which is a UN body with 148 Member States working to promote the role of science in ocean management and governance. Previously he has been employed at UNIS, NERSC and in industry. He was the head of the Geophysical Institute 2003-2011 and has recently completed 8 years of service in the university board as well as in the Norwegian National Commission for UNESCO.
Abstract:
The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC of UNESCO) has launched an initiative to make 2021-2030 an International (UN) Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. This idea has received strong support from a range of collaborating UN bodies, international organisations and key Member States. The talk will outline the status and way forward for planning priorities and actual content of the decade, point to possible ways for the science community to get involved, and invite discussion and input.
