BCCR Seminar: Daniel Koestner
Dear all,
Next week’s Monday BCCR seminar is moved to Tuesday (4th February) at 11:00. This BCCR seminar will be given by Daniel Koestner from the Department of Physics and Technology at UiB. He will talk about how “Biogeochemical-Argo floats reveal seasonality of the biological carbon pump influenced by the Lofoten Basin Eddy”.
The seminar will take place in Bjerknes lecture room (4th floor, room 4020). For those not able to attend in person, it will be possible to join on zoom. There will be a fun surprise from BCCR!
PhD Defense: Omar El Guernaoui
Title of the Ph.d. thesis: "Scaling non-stationary turbulence during the afternoon and evening transition of the convective boundary layer"
Les merCROSS THEME “Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in the Earth sciences”
Seminar informations
There will be four different talks, given by members of the different BCCR themes:
Carbon theme: Xabier Davila from NORCE will present “Global Freshwater Sources and their Variability through Salinity-d18O Relationships: A Machine Learning Solution to a Water Mass Problem”
Global theme: Eurico Noleto-Filho from GFI will present “Leveraging LLMs and Computer Vision for Environmental Monitoring.”
Hazards theme:Robinson Hordoir from IMR will present “Barents Sea Atlantification Driven by a Shift in Atmospheric Synoptic Timescale”
Polar theme : Leo Edel from NERSC will present “Reconstruction of Arctic sea-ice thickness (1992-2010) based on a hybrid machine learning and data assimilation approach”
The seminar will take place in Bjerknes lecture room (4th floor, room 4020) on Monday 10th February at 11:00. For those not able to attend in person, it will be possible to join on zoom.
BCCR Seminar:“Why is the ocean's overturning circulation unstable?”
About the speaker: Andreas Klocker a senior researcher in the Earth Systems group at NORCE Climate and Environment and he is affiliated with the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research.
Machine learning journal club
The Bjerknes machine learning journal club is returning 20th February, when Josh Dorrington will present ML for process understanding: using variational autoencoders to learn about extreme precipitation.
The journal club is an open group for discussion, presentation and learning about all things AI, ML and DL. We encourage participation at all levels - beginner to advanced! We are planning four sessions for spring 2025, with the remaining being 20th March, 24th April and 22nd May. We also welcome suggestions for papers and volunteers for presenting. More info available at the below link, and there is also an email list, email stefans@uib.no to be added

BCCR Seminar: “The water mass transformation in Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation”
Next Monday’s BCCR Seminar will be a nice follow-up to Andreas’ seminar last Monday. It will be given by Kristofer Döös from Stockholm University, who is currently a Bjerknes Visiting Fellow. He will talk about “The water mass transformation in Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation”
